National School Moves Day promotes physical activity and health in education
KINGSTON, Jamaica – More than 2,000 primary and high schools students convened at Manchester High School to commemorate National School Moves Day (NSMD) last Friday to participate in a celebration of physical activity and wellness.
Observed as National School Moves Day, the event themed “Live Life Moving: Every Movement Matters!” was a testament to the ministry’s commitment to enhancing students’ overall health and academic performance through physical activity.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Education and Youth, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the day-long event welcomed students from all regions, with guests including Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Christopher Tufton and state minister in the Ministry of Education and Youth, Marsha Smith.
In her opening address, Smith emphasised the critical role of physical activity in fostering holistic student development.
“Today, we have taken a significant step towards nurturing a generation of healthy, resilient, and empowered individuals. Let us continue to champion the cause of physical activity and wellness, for every movement matters in shaping a brighter future for Jamaica. Through initiatives like National School Moves Day, we strive to instil lifelong habits of healthy living and empower students to reach their full potential,” said Smith.
According to a news release on Thursday, the event was a hub of activity, offering a spectrum of engaging activities and interactive booths. From mini-competitions and obstacle course races to mass workouts and dance-offs, students revelled in the joy of movement.
Moreover, select primary and high schools from Region 5 showcased innovative physical activity initiatives through captivating live demonstrations.
Nutritional food samples and fitness tips were provided at various booths, complemented by informative physical activity and nutrition displays catering to students, educators, and parents alike.
Reflecting on the broader significance of NSMD, Tufton said, “National School Moves Day underscores the symbiotic relationship between physical activity, wellness, and academic achievement. It serves as a potent reminder that investing in our youth’s health is an investment in our nation’s future prosperity.”
In the six weeks leading up to the event, participating schools eagerly competed in dance and jingle contests, along with poster competitions, fostering student engagement and reinforcing the core message of National School Moves Day.
Beyond encouraging students to embrace an active lifestyle, NSMD emerged as a catalyst for promoting health education and wellness initiatives in schools throughout the region.
“The aim was to have students depart with a newfound enthusiasm for physical activity and a deeper understanding of its importance in their lives and academic pursuits,” said Smith.
