Woman on theft charge agrees to pay back victim
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Tanecia Miller, who was accused of stealing money and other items from another woman’s shop, has reached an agreement with the victim following a formal mediation process.
She has agreed to reimburse the complainant for the financial losses incurred as a result of her actions.
Miller, who is charged with larceny as a servant, appeared before presiding Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton at the St James Parish Court on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in January 2023, when the complainant requested Miller’s assistance in running her snack shop due to her being unwell.
Subsequently, the complainant discovered $200,000 missing from a box that only she and the defendant had access to.
The total value of store items reported missing, which included money and food, was $291,900.
However, the parties came to an agreement that the complainant would withdraw funds from her salary on a weekly basis, leaving a remaining balance of $102,000.
The parties then agreed to attend a mediation session to resolve their dispute amicably. However, despite their efforts, they were unable to come to a mutual agreement.
As a result, all necessary preparations were made for the trial.
Another mediation attempt was made and the parties eventually reached an agreement.
The outstanding balance was not disclosed on Wednesday, but Fairclough-Hylton scheduled the case for mention on May 28 and advised Miller to have at least $10,000 available on that date.
Her bail was extended.
