D’Yani’s ‘911’ takes centre stage on The Recoup compilation
KINGSTON, Jamaica — In a nod to Jamaica’s musical legacy, recording artist D’Yani recently seized the opportunity to delve into musical experimentation with The Recoup ‘riddim’. Born out of a collaboration with renowned producer Kemar McGregor, the project offered D’Yani a chance to blend his contemporary style with the iconic sounds of the 90s dancehall era.
As a self-proclaimed product of the 90s, D’Yani found himself drawn to the nostalgic charm of The Recoup ‘riddim’ with his single ‘911’.
“The original dancehall style of The Recoup ‘riddim’ really brought a retro feel that was beyond my years, and gave me inspiration to experiment with my sound,” he told Observer Online. “It was a great experience. I am a child of the 90s and therefore a child of that era of music and so it was actually a big honour to experience this.”
Reflecting on the unparalleled influence of the 90s on Jamaican music, D’Yani emphasised its significance as a pivotal moment in the island’s cultural history. “Each generation tends to believe that their era was the golden generation, however, the 90s was definitely a column for the culture of dancehall,” he noted, acknowledging the timeless appeal of the era.
Expressing admiration for legendary artistes of that period such as Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killer, and Sizzla, D’Yani confessed his desire to collaborate with them if given the chance. Yet, working with McGregor, a respected figure in the industry, proved to be an equally enriching experience.
“Working with Kemar was a good vibe, he knows music and his track record speaks for itself. The opportunity and experience laying down this track was a good one.”
With his single ‘911’, D’Yani seamlessly blended elements of the past and present, embodying the ethos of The Recoup ‘riddim’.
“The riddim’s retro-modern style really blends well, not only merging generations but also highlighting the nostalgic feel of the 90s with a fresh approach,” he remarked. Encouraged by the positive reception, D’Yani hinted at further exploration of this musical fusion.
“I like experimenting in music so you will definitely hear more of this style coming from me,” he stated.
Leaving expectations to his fans, D’Yani remains focused on his passion for music.
“With every song done, I try to do my best. Regarding expectations, I have none. I love making music, because it’s my passion, and the thoughts projected have already been executed. So now it’s just time to let the music do the work and promote accordingly and we will see the growth,” D’Yani asserted.
In D’Yani’s eyes, The Recoup ‘riddim’ isn’t merely a project; it’s a testament to the enduring power of music to bridge generations and transcend time.
In addition to his collaboration on The Recoup project, D’Yani’s musical journey is set to reach new heights as he prepares to once again grace the stage at Reggae Sumfest. With his blend of contemporary flair, D’Yani promises to captivate audiences at the festival, further solidifying his position as a rising star in Jamaica’s vibrant music scene.
The Recoup Riddim was released on Friday, May 3, and is available on all digital platforms for streaming and downloading.
