Trainer Nicholas Wehby saddles first winner
Nicholas Wehby won his first race as a trainer on Saturday, May 4, 2024. That first success was accomplished with his charge
Sippin On Sunshine in the ninth race on the day.
Sippin On Sunshine’s triumph came in Division II of a maiden special weight contest for native-bred three-year-old fillies over six furlongs. Sippin On Sunshine won by a neck in a time of 1:17.1.
“I feel very good winning my first race as a trainer,” Wehby told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Race Guide.
“I am elated and I am very happy for the horse. Sippin On Sunshine ran a very good race to win and I am pleased with her performance. The plan now is to watch and see how she comes out of the race and then assess her from here on,” he added.
With Omar Walker in the saddle, Sippin On Sunshine shot to the front at the off and held the lead ahead of Kaylyn Melody (Robert Halledeen), Lady Sarsutta (Roderick DaCosta), and Princess Fianie (Tevin Foster).
Sippin On Sunshine upped the tempo and began to draw away from rivals navigating the half-mile and brought the field into the lane on a merry clip.
Although she began to shorten inside the final stages of the race, Sippin On Sunshine had done more than enough to hold on at the wire from the fast-finishing Kaylyn Melody. Valley of Love (Roger Hewitt) finished third.
