Hillel takes overall champion title at YMCA/BK Prep, Primary Swimming Champs
HILLEL Academy was crowned the overall champion of the YMCA/Burger King Prep & Primary Schools Swim Championships recently, securing the top spot with 243 points. Their performances highlighted the event, demonstrating remarkable skill and determination in both the boys’ category and the overall competition.
In the girls’ category St Hugh’s Preparatory School continued their dominant streak, leading with 113 points and extending their consecutive meet victories in 2024 to five. The meet also featured record-breaking efforts from Kai Lawson, a sixth-grade student at St Hugh’s, who set new benchmarks in the 9-10 age group for the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.
Mona Preparatory School and Saints Peter and Paul Preparatory School were closely matched, each tallying 159 points to tie for second place overall. Despite challenging weather conditions the competitive spirit and enthusiasm of the young swimmers remained undiminished.
A highlight of the event was the Vibes Check award, a special recognition — featuring Jennifer “JennyJenny” Small — by BK to honour the school that demonstrated the most team spirit. Sts Peter and Paul won this award, taking the $50,000 prize for their lively and enthusiastic participation which greatly contributed to the event’s atmosphere.
Burger King Assistant Brand Manager Rashai Graham is proud of the partnership.
“Burger King has supported the BK swim meet for over two decades,” she said. “We believe in the power of sports to advance youth development and highlight under-represented sports in Jamaica. It’s inspiring to see these young athletes showcase their abilities in such a supportive environment.”
