JDA seeks financial support for World Championship team

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Draughts Association (JDA) is urgently appealing for financial assistance to support the participation of three representatives in the upcoming 2024 World Championships Draughts-64 competition in Moscow, Russia, scheduled for September 5-15.

The prestigious event presents a remarkable opportunity for Jamaica’s top players to showcase their skills and compete against the world’s best from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

The JDA says they are determined to seize this chance but financial constraints threaten to hinder their efforts.

Jamaica has a rich history of producing exceptional draughts players, with International Grand Master (GMI) Wayne Reid leading the charge. Reid’s impressive performances in national and international competitions have cemented his reputation as one of the world’s top players.

The JDA has competed internationally in the World Championship in draughts in St Petersburg, Russia (2015); the World Championship draughts in St Petersburg, Russia (2017); the Pan-American Championships in Montego Bay, Jamaica (2018); the Pan-American International draughts 10×10 Championship in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2022); and the American Poolcheckers National Championship (2023).

The JDA has also demonstrated its commitment to developing the sport, hosting regular tournaments and national championships and nurturing young talent.

The JDA is reaching out to the public and private sectors for financial assistance to cover the costs associated with participating in the World Championships. The estimated cost for the team’s participation is $1.5 million which will cover airfare travel and entry fees.

The Jamaica Draughts Association is inviting all Jamaicans to join them on this exciting journey.

“Your support will enable our players to represent Jamaica with pride and compete at the highest level. Let us come together to promote and develop the sport of draughts in Jamaica,” JDA president Sudian Suckram said.

Those wishing to contribute to the JDA’s efforts can do so through their bank details:
