Teams secure remaining spots in JFF Championship
QUALIFICATION for the 2024-25 season of the Jamaica Football Federation Championships was completed on Saturday, with Spanish Town Police, Progressive FC and Duncans United joining Holland PYC after topping their respective groups in the play-offs.
Each winner of the four groups will be promoted to the championships which is expected to start later in the season. The top two teams will be promoted to the Jamaica Premier League for the 2025-26 season.
Spanish Town Police topped Group A after beating Seaforth CC 2-0 at Prison Oval in St Catherine, while Progressive FC came from behind to register a 3-1 win over Axum to win Group B, and Duncans United topped Group D after a 5-0 trouncing of Lucea United.
Chevon Walters scored in the 23rd minute and Ackeem Coleman added another as Spanish Town Police finished with nine points — two more than Boys’ Town.
At Carder Park in Portland, O’Brian Reid scored a hat-trick in the final 19 minutes of the game, plus stoppage time, to deny Axum who needed a win to advance.
David Page gave Axum the lead in the 34th minute but Reid equalised from the penalty spot in the 69th minute. Reid then gave them the lead in the 81st and added a third in stoppage time.
The Portland-based team had only needed a draw to win the zone. They finished with 10 points to Axum’s four.
The high-octane Duncans United team won by a 5-0 margin for the third time in six games, with double strikes from Renard Cunningham (62nd and 67th) and Tavon Eccleston (73rd and 81st). Garfield Stewart scored the other goal in the 77th minute.
In the other game, Granville United ended the series with back-to-back wins after hammering 12th Street of Westmoreland 5-0. It was 12th Street’s second-successive loss by that margin after going down to Duncans a week earlier.
Ajani Clarke scored in the 18th and 73rd minutes for Granville United while Andre Tate also bagged a brace with goals in the 53rd and 70th minutes. Dexter Smith (39th) also got on the scoresheet.
