Belair High first through to daCosta Cup round of 32

Cornwall could secure progress with win over Herbert Morrison

Belair High became the first school to qualify for the round of 32 in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after beating Mount St Joseph Catholic 5-1 in the Zone F return game in Mandeville on Wednesday.

Five different players scored for Belair High as they chalked up their seventh-straight win — the school’s best-ever run in the competition — to ensure their spot in the second round for the third-consecutive season.

Ajwani Wauchope scored his 10th goal of the season, while Fante Johnson got his fifth, Jayvian Rocket scored his third, and Christian Henry and Zavier Grey each got their second for Belair High.

Glenmuir High also won their seventh-straight game and Mannings School made it their sixth straight. Frome Technical won their fifth, beating Anchovy High 5-1 as the losers fell to third in Zone B.

Orane Watson scored a double, taking his tally of goals on the season to 15, as Glenmuir beat Old Harbour High 2-0 to complete a perfect first-round schedule in Zone I.

Mannings School are a point away from advancing after beating neighbours Godfrey Stewart High 5-0.

Kajaye Williams led Mannings School with two goals, while Dainton Williams, Lennox Wright, and Gregory Phillips also scored.

After starting the season with four-straight wins, Anchovy High have been brought back to Earth with 1-5 losses in back-to-back games, the latest coming against Frome.

Frome Technical led 1-0 up to the 75th minute before scoring four times in the final 15 minutes. Stevaughn Spence scored a double, while Ramondo Eccleston, Obryan Reid and Kishmar Clayton added the other goals for Frome. Maliek Stephenson scored a consolation for Anchovy.

Frome Technical (15 points) opened up a three-point lead over Rusea’s High, who were 5-0 winners over Knockalva Technical.

Munro College took firm control of Zone E after Antwon Smith’s double led them to a 2-1 win over Newell High, while second-placed BB Coke High were held 0-0 by Maggotty High.

Many-time former champions St Elizabeth Technical lost for the second time this season, beaten 1-2 by Lacovia High who were getting their first win this season.

Munro College are on 17 points, five more than BB Coke, with St Elizabeth Technical High School in third place.

Central High (12 points) joined Clarendon College at the top of Zone H after beating Claude McKay High 6-0 with two goals from Ian Noel.

Hours after they were docked six points for fielding an ineligible player in two games in September, Ocho Rios High rebounded with a 6-0 win over Aabuthnott Gallimore High. Ocho Rios are in second place behind Brown’s Town High who were 2-0 winners over Ferncourt High.

The St Ann-based school, which had won its first six games, was found guilty of using a player who had accumulated three yellow cards in the first four games and should have missed the game against Ferncourt High at Drax Hall on September 24.

A release from ISSA stated: “If a player receives 3 yellow cards in the preliminary round, he will automatically miss his team[‘s] next match.”

Ocho Rios had defeated Ferncourt High 10-0 in the September 24 encounter and then beat Marcus Garvey Technical 8-0 on September 27. Both games played at Drax Hall.

As a result of the ISSA ruling, both Ferncourt High and Marcus Garvey Technical will be awarded three points and a victory margin of 3-0.

On Thursday, former champions Cornwall College could secure their place in the round of 32 if they can beat Herbert Morrison Technical and hope for favourable results in the other two games in Zone A.

Cornwall, who have a healthy lead in the zone, are on 18 points after six consecutive wins. They have nine points more than Maldon High and Green Pond who are tied for second. Irwin High are on six points.

The Maldon High vs Irwin High contest, which is to be played at Irwin, could be the key game, as a draw would be beneficial to the leaders if they can get three points at their long-time rivals.

Dinthill Technical will hope to join McGrath High at the top of Zone J when they meet Tacius Golding High.

McGrath High are on 10 points, three more than Dinthill Technical, and both would move closer to a place in the round of 32.
