Jack’s River, Bonnie Gate win in St Mary L P Martin cricket
Jack’s River and Bonnie Gate scored convincing wins over Highgate and Hamilton Mountain, respectively, in the L P Martin Funeral Home St Mary 35-over Elite Cricket competition on Sunday.
At the Jack’s River playing field, the home team defeated Highgate by nine wickets in a pulsating encounter.
Batting first, the vaunted Highgate batting line-up was restricted to 149 all out off 24 overs with national Under-15 representative Tyson Gordon top-scoring with a polished innings of 51.
He was supported by St Mary parish player Johnyine Stanford and Onjue Taylor who both made 14. Bowling for Jack’s River, Tyreese Saunders was the main destroyer with 4 for 29 off seven overs.
In reply, Jack’s River strolled to 153 for 1 off just 21 overs with Lesmond Lewis smashing a fierce 46 not out. Supporting him were young St Mary parish wicketkeeper batsman Jiovanni Richardson who stroked 39 and Nick Saunders who retired hurt on 20. Gordon took 1 for 39 off five overs for Highgate.
Over at Bonnie Gate Oval, it was runs galore as the hosts defeated newcomers Hamilton Mountain by 147 runs. Batting first Bonnie Gate raced to 258 with former St Mary representative Jason Goldson smashing 56 and current St Mary player Javiere Green stroking 51. Roger Garnett took 2 for 54.
In their turn at the crease, Hamilton Mountain had no answer to the Bonnie Gate attack and were bundled out for 101. Shavaughn Boyd and Green grabbed two wickets each.
Junior Mattison, the first vice-president of the St Mary Cricket Association, was pleased with what he said was the high standard of play exhibited in what was the second week of the competition. He expressed the association’s appreciation for the level of discipline exhibited by the players which he said augurs well for the future of the sport in the parish.
Zachary Irwin, executive chairman of L P Martin Funeral Home, pledged his company’s assistance in the development of the sport in St Mary.
