17 Haitians reportedly in Jamaica for a year returned home

PORTLAND, Jamaica— Seventeen Haitians who have reportedly been in Jamaica for about a year were sent back to their homeland Wednesday night.

Observer Online understands the group consists of 13 males and four females.

The Haitians who had landed illegally in Jamaica, some of whom were in the custody of the State, were rounded up over the weekend to be sent back home.

It is understood that a court order was issued for them to be sent to Haiti.

It is reported that some members of the group were living in homes with partners, and others started families.

Haiti has been mired for years in intertwining economic, security and political crises, resulting in thousands of citizens fleeing the country.

The assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021 dramatically worsened the situation, with gangs taking a stronghold in the Caribbean country.
