Glenmuir, Munro on hunt for daCosta quarters

Former champions Glenmuir High and Munro College are among four teams that can book their spots in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition when the round of 16 continues with five games on Wednesday.

Central High and McGrath High are also seeking to extend their best seasons in years and could also make progress today with a round of games still to be played.

Kemps Hill High just missed booking the first spot by playing out a 0-0 draw against Garvey Maceo High in a Zone 1 game played at Foga Road yesterday.

A win would have seen Kemps Hill qualify for the quarter-finals but they fell to second place after St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) beat Alphansus Davis High 6-1 and took over the lead on goal-difference, both teams on four points and will meet in the group decider on Saturday.

In another game played yesterday, Dinthill Technical rebounded from their 4-0 loss to Glenmuir, to beat Happy Grove High 6-1 at Dinthill and move into a three-way tie with Glenmuir and Ocho Rios, all on three points.

The losses ended Alphansus Davis’ and Happy Grove’s chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals and are the first qualifiers for the first round of the Ben Francis Cup.

Justin McPherson led STETHS with a hat-trick while there were goals from Deandre Barnett, Kaieem Lewis and Shemar Stewart as they extended their unbeaten run to seven games, stretching back to the return leg of the first round and including the round of 32.

At Dinthill, Rodain Reid and Raheem Harris both scored braces for the home team while Omarion Small and Tyrese Gowe also got on the score sheet.

Today, Glenmuir, who are on a four-game winning run, hosts Ocho Rios in a Zone 3 top-of-the-zone clash in May Pen and the winner of this game will book their spot in the final eight.

Both were impressive winners in the opening set of round of 16 games on Saturday, Ocho Rios trounced Happy Grove 5-0 in Portland while Glenmuir beat Dinthill 4-0 in a rematch of last year’s semi-finals.

Munro, who are coming off their first win over Cornwall College since 1981, will be full of confidence when they take on two-time defending champions Clarendon College at home in the hills of St Elizabeth.

Clarendon, who have been playing at a lower level than they have the last two seasons, came from a goal down to earn a draw against Frome Technical and could find an even more resilient opponent today.

Antwone Smith has been on a tear for Munro and leads their scoring and is expected to be the focal point today.

Wednesday’s games:

*All matches start at 3 pm

Glenmuir High vs Ocho Rios High — Glenmuir High

Munro College vs Clarendon College — Munro College

Cornwall College vs Frome Technical — Jarrett Park

Denbigh High vs Central High — Wembley Centre of Excellence

McGrath High vs Manchester High — Dinthill Technical

Tuesday’s results:

STETHS 6, Alphansus Davis High 1

Garvey Maceo High 0, Kemps Hill High 0

Dinthill Technical 6, Happy Grove High 1
