Uco Valley’s Bodega La Vigilia

In the heart of Mendoza’s renowned Uco Valley, Bodega La Vigilia offers a unique fusion of heritage winemaking and contemporary flair. Located near Tunuyán, this boutique winery exemplifies the meticulous craft of winemaking elevated by the pristine terroir of Mendoza’s high-altitude vineyards. At 1,100 metres above sea level, the estate benefits from the valley’s impressive thermal amplitude and mineral-rich, stony soils, which contribute to the vibrant character and complexity of its wines.

Founded as a family venture, La Vigilia was built around a passion for producing wines that echo the richness of the local terroir. The bodega spans an expansive 1,850 square metres, combining architectural elegance with high-end production technology. Here, tradition meets innovation where grape cultivation and wine production are carried out using both state-of-the-art stainless steel tanks and more artisanal methods, such as fermenting in concrete vats and amphorae. Oak ageing in French barrels adds another dimension, imparting depth to wines like their celebrated Malbecs, Cabernet Francs, and Syrahs.

The winery’s philosophy, rooted in patience and respect for natural rhythms, informs every aspect of its operation. From their aged wines, reserve wines and authentic wines La Vigilia’s winemaking process is grounded in a deep commitment to quality and authenticity. This unique dedication sets La Vigilia apart, appealing to visitors who seek an immersive wine experience in one of Mendoza’s most scenic landscapes. Guests can enjoy not only the wines but also a farm-to-table dining experience at its restaurant, Rope, which serves innovative Argentine dishes inspired by local ingredients.

This bodega’s integration of tradition with cutting-edge methods, alongside its picturesque setting in the Uco Valley, has earned it a special place among Argentina’s premier wineries. It provides a distinctive experience that resonates with both seasoned connoisseurs and newcomers to Mendoza’s wine scene. Whether exploring the atmospheric barrel room or savouring a tasting with views of the Andes, visitors to La Vigilia are promised an experience that is as memorable as it is refined. La Vigilia offers an impressive selection of wines, each crafted to embody the essence of the Uco Valley’s terroir.

The winery’s Malbec is a flagship expression, known for its bold, fruit-forward profile balanced by elegant tannins and a touch of minerality. La Vigilia’s Malbec reflects the valley’s unique terroir, combining intense sunlight and cool nights to produce a wine with remarkable depth and ageing potential. Another standout is the Cabernet Franc, a varietal gaining recognition in Mendoza for its complex, aromatic qualities. La Vigilia’s version is known for its vibrant acidity, layered red fruit, and hints of herbal and floral notes. This wine, much like the valley’s growing Cabernet Franc trend, is characterised by its elegance and ability to pair well with a variety of foods.

The Syrah is another highlight, boasting a deep, rich profile with notes of dark berries, pepper, and spice, this grape thrives in the Uco Valley’s cool climate, producing wines with bold flavours and a refined structure. Finally, La Vigilia’s Sauvignon Blanc offers a refreshing contrast, with bright citrus and green apple notes, perfect for warm Mendoza days.

Bodega La Vigilia is more than a place to taste wine, offering an immersive experience designed to connect guests with the land, the craft, and the culture of Mendoza. Today,
Thursday Food is excited to share with you a few of this winery’s best labels:

La Ofrenda Malbec Reserva 2021 forms part of the bodega’s ‘aged wines’ category and is made from 100 per cent Malbec grapes. This wine is a deep ruby red with violet reflections that offers a pronounced intensity. It expresses notes of ripe plums and chocolate, floral, with earthy hints and spicy touches of black pepper. Great concentration of flavours and an enveloping and silky texture, a wine of great complexity, intense, balanced and fresh at the same time.

La Vigilia Cabernet Franc 2021, a 100 per cent varietal that scored 93 points in
Descorchados 2024 rankings, is a wine with a ruby red colour. Part of the ‘reserve wines’ category, it has an intense and complex bouquet of black cherry, blueberry and cassis, well integrated and blended by the barrel, with its elegant and soft woody notes. On the palate it is balanced with good acidity and silky tannins while the finish is persistent and unforgettable.

La Vigilia Syrah 2021 is made from 100 per cent Syrah grapes which are grown 1,100 metres above sea level. This wine is also ruby red in colour in addition to having an intense yet complex bouquet of black cherry, blueberry as well as clove in combination with meaty notes. On the palate it is balanced with good acidity and silky tannins. The finish is persistent and unforgettable.

La Vigilia Sauvignon Blanc 2022 is a 100 per cent varietal that forms part of the winery’s ‘authentic wines’ category. The wine, which has a 13.3 per cent alcoholic volume, is pale yellow with green highlights. The nose is very elegant, balanced between grapefruit and passion fruit with distinctive notes of jalapeño while some delicate floral nuances linger on the palate.

La Vigilia Rosado 2023, which is made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir grapes and scored 92 points in the 2024 Descorchados rankings, is salmon-coloured with orange highlights. Very elegant on the nose, it is balanced between sweet notes of red fruits, quince, and citrus notes with pink grapefruit standing out. On the palate, the pink grapefruit lingers, the body is sustained and a lively acidity is perceived, giving it a long and refreshing finish.

From vineyard tours and guided tastings to private events, La Vigilia offers an array of experiences that appeal to both wine aficionados and casual visitors. In an era where wineries often rush production to meet demand, La Vigilia remains steadfast in its commitment to quality, taking the time to let each wine reach its full potential. Bodega La Vigilia is more than a winery; it’s a celebration of Mendoza’s winemaking legacy and a testament to the beauty of the Uco Valley, a place where wine is not only made but cherished, from vine to glass.

Salud!
