D Major tops New York Reggae chart with Caravan of Love

Singer D Major recently topped the Foundation Radio Network (New York) Reggae chart with his faithful interpretation of the song Caravan of Love.

Originally recorded by Isley-Jasper-Isley, the second half of the Isley Brothers’ 3 + 3 line-up of the 1970s, the song topped Billboard’s R&B Soul Singles chart and reached #51 on the Hot 100 chart.

D Major said he had always been a fan of the song.

“One day I was at Penthouse studio and I heard the instrumental. They were going through a bunch of tracks and the idea hit me. This was around five years ago. I am a fan of the song, and I’ve always been drawn to that type of music,” D Major told the Jamaica Observer.

This isn’t the first #1 song outside of Jamaica for D Major.

“I have had #1 songs in different territories. It’s beautiful how music transcends language barriers,” he said, while pointing out that songs including That’s What Love’s About, Real Know Real, and Girl of My Dreams topped charts outside of Jamaica.

Caravan of Love is featured on D Major’s EP Morning Prayer, which was released in March. The EP also has a collaboration with Usain Bolt titled Unstoppable, as well as the tracks Alpha and Omega, 10 Outta 10, and I Believe.

His previous covers that became hits include Woman (originally recorded by John Lennon) and Bonnie Raitt’s I Can’t Make You Love Me.

Still on the New York Reggae chart, Thank You Lord by Bugle, featuring Buju Banton and Damian “Jr Gong” Marley takes over the #1 spot, while Such Man Party by Buju Banton steps up from #15 to #10.

Nadine Sutherland’s 9 out of 10 goes from #14 to #9, while In Every Country by Busy Signal glides from #16 to #12.

Love Doctor by Shuga is on the move, improving from #22 to #19, and Tell Me Now by Nadine Sutherland (#27) and Fearless (#28) by 1980s hit-maker Chuck Turner are the new entries.

Over on the South Florida Reggae chart, Private Party by singer JC Lodge takes over the #1 spot, while We Need Love by Marcia J Ball moves up from #11 to #9.

Protoje’s 80s Wild débuts at #22 and Peaceful Woman by Pam Hall is new at #24.

On the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs chart, Awuke by Davido and YG Marley backtracks from #12 to #23 in its fourth week on the chart. It peaked at #9.

Awuke however has better luck on Billboard’s Rhythmic Top 40 chart, surging from #39 to #36 in its second week.

Meanwhile, Skip Marley’s Close continues its upward trajectory stepping up from #31 to #30 in its fourth week, and Akon’s sampling of Jermaine Edwards’s hit
It’s a Beautiful Day, renamed Akon’s Beautiful Day inches up from #13 to #12 in its 7th week.

Nobody Move by Major Lazer featuring Vybz Kartel remains in the #2 spot on Germany’s Urban/R&B/Hip-Hop chart, while Smooth Lovin by the duo Krept and Konan featuring Popcaan enters at #23.

Bob Marley and the Wailers continues dominance of the #1 spot on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, as Legend clocks 255 non-consecutive weeks on top.

Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection by Shaggy remains at #2, while inching up to #3 is Dutty Rock by Sean Paul. His Dutty Classics Collection dips to #4.

Stick Figure occupies #5, #6 and #7 with World on Fire, Wisdom, and Set in Stone, respectively.

UB45 by UB40 re-enters at #8, having peaked at #7. It clocks 14 non-consecutive weeks on the chart.

Rastaman Vibration by Bob Marley and the Wailers climbs to #9 and Greatest Hits by UB40 dips to #10.
