Sunshine Girls sweep South Africa
World number three Sunshine Girls completed the sweep over South Africa in their three-Test series with a commanding win at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday.
After winning the first two games, Jamaica’s senior women continued their dominance in front of a packed stadium as they lifted the Margaret Beckford Trophy. It was a fairly close first quarter, with the Jamaicans taking a 14-9 lead over the South African women.
However, the Sasher-Gaye Henry-Wright-coached team would turn up the heat in the second quarter as they went into the break with a 29-19 advantage.
Despite giving up 13 goals in the third quarter, the Sunshine Girls would score 15 of their own as they continued to lead 45-32. A South African comeback was unlikely due to the defensive performances of goal defence Latanya Wilson and goalkeeper Shamera Sterling-Humphrey. Shimona Nelson-Jok also continued her impressive showing on the offensive end as she helped add another 13 goals to cap off the win.
Nelson-Jok, the leading scorer for the series, finished with 37 goals from 39 attempts. Shanice Beckford supported with 14 goals.
It’s back-to-back series wins for the Sunshine Girls who beat England Roses 2-1 in November.
