Jevaughn Powell back home at Racers after graduating from college
Jamaica’s former 400m champion Jevaughn Powell is back at Racers Track Club under the tutelage of veteran coach Glen Mills, after recently graduating from the University of Florida.
The 24-year-old will have as his training partners, the 2023 World Championship 400m gold medallist Antonio Watson, Oblique Seville, Xavier Nairne, Jeremy Bembridge, Jhevaughn Matherson and Bouwahjgie Nkrumie.
Powell, who was the only Jamaican to reach the semi-final of the 400m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, will make his seasonal debut at the Camperdown Classic on Saturday, February 8. He will line up in Heat D of the men’s 400m against the likes of Zandrion Barnes (44.90), Assinie Wilson (45.51), Tyrese Hyman (47.72) and Nairne (47.86).
The former Edwin Allen High and Kingston College standout has a personal best of 20.21 over 200m and 44.54 for the 400m.
In 2022, Powell won the Jamaican National Championships over 400 metres. He was eliminated in the heats at the 2022 World Championship but was a part of the 4×400 team that won the silver medal.
After leaving KC, he competed for the University of Texas, El Paso before switching to the University of Florida where he finished third at the NCAA in 2024.
He also finished third at the 2024 Jamaican Championship prior to the Olympic Games where he was a semi-finalist.
Powell was named a First Team All-American (400m, 4x100m, 4x400m) in 2024 and helped the Gators win their third consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championship as he scored points in three separate events: 400m (44.54 (PR) – 3rd Place, 6 Points); 4x100m (38.34 – 4th Place, 5 Points) and 4x400m (2:58.98 – 3rd Place, 6 Points).
