Scotiabank addresses fraud allegations
KINGSTON, Jamaica – While confirming an ongoing fraud attempt affecting debit card holders, Scotiabank is insisting that the issue is not widespread.
“Regrettably, cyber security incidents are a reality of banking in a digital age. While we can confirm a recent fraud attempt affecting some debit cardholders, it is not widespread, not related to credit cards and not directly related to Google Pay,” the bank said Friday.
In recent days several Scotiabank customers have uploaded videos to social media alleging that their funds were being accessed from elsewhere via their debit cards.
Highlighting what it described as the unfortunate success of the scam the financial institution said it was working to resolve the complaints.
“Scotiabank continuously monitors and assesses potential threats through our Fraud Monitoring Unit. The bank has made significant investments in cyber protection and the vast majority of fraud attempts are diverted. Unfortunately, sometimes scam attempts are successful and we take all such cases seriously and work with every affected client to address each case. We have been reaching out to affected clients to address this matter and all clients impacted by this incident will be reimbursed,” the explained.
The bank is now encouraging clients who see fraudulent transactions on their accounts to contact the customer care centre at 888 4 SCOTIA.
