Dancehall artiste Skippa released after being detained by police
Dancehall artiste Skippa, whose real name is Tahjay Clark, was released from police custody on Saturday after turning himself in to the authorities earlier last week.
“Skippa went in with his lawyer on Thursday,” one source told Observer Online.
Skippa’s management confirmed that he had been detained.
Skippa recently released a song, 1DB4L, which features scenes which appear to pay tribute to slain Spanish Town strongman Othneil ‘Thickman’ Lobban aka ‘1Daddy Badness’, which features the lyrics:
Dawg, yu know the badness caan end
Nothing nuh change, ah still Daddy Tawes Pen
Capture Land, Backbush, the k clip still bend
The whole Common, uptown
We ah still fi yu children
Mi sorry say yu couldn’t see it and dodge it
Mi stop cry, ah just the heat mi a carry
Couldn’t wait fi turn it pon a jeep or lorry
See it de, mi waan kill somebody
In the wake of releasing the song, Skippa was listed as a person of interest by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). The St Catherine North Police issued a public notice last Wednesday, naming Skippa among nine individuals wanted for questioning in ongoing investigations.
The police urged him to contact detectives at the Spanish Town Police Station immediately and upon doing that, he was detained.
Skippa is best known for the single Young, which topped YouTube’s trending chart and secured the No 2 spot on Kingston’s Apple Music Top 25.
Another artiste, Kiprich, will reportedly turn himself in Monday with his lawyer, after being named a person of interest on Friday. The artiste reportedly performed a One Order Gang dubplate bigging up the late gang leader, ‘Thickman’.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This story was updated from earlier version which indicated that Skippa was still in police custody.
