ST MARY, Jamaica – A curfew has been imposed in Iterboreale, St Mary as tensions rise between residents and police following the killing of 28-year-old Kevin Cunnigham on Friday.

A 48-hour curfew was imposed in sections of the community starting at 6 pm Saturday, February 22 until 6 pm Monday, February 24.

According to Acting Superintendent of Police in charge of the parish, Anthony Wallace, the curfew had to be imposed due to threats of demonstration and roadblocks and threats to the security forces.

Cunnigham was killed at a candlelight vigil for late reggae artiste Determine.

The police have reported that Cunnigham had brandished a firearm at a law man who in turn discharged his firearm and fatally shot him.

The boundaries of the curfew are as follows :

The northern boundary extends from the Annotto Bay library running eastward to St Theresa’s Catholic Church, covering the shoreline of Annotto Bay.

The eastern boundary runs southward for about 150 meters from St Theresa’s Catholic church to a section of the Gibraltar housing scheme.

The southern boundary moves westward from the Gibraltar housing scheme to a section of Gray’s Inn Farm road.

The western boundary extends northward back to the Annotto Bay library.

“This is a further intervention to address the escalating threat to public safety and prevent further destabilisation in the community,” Wallace told the Jamaica Observer.

Residents are adamant that Cunnigham was killed in cold blood by the police. The incident is being investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom).
