Defending champs St Catherine surge to day 1 lead at JTA/Sagicor National Athletics Championships
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Defending champions St Catherine are making their bid for a consecutive title very clear, leading by 14 points after day 1 of the 41st JTA/Sagicor National Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
More than 1,200 athletes representing all 14 parishes began their pursuit in disciplines on the track and in the field.
With St Catherine closing Day 1 with 43 points, they are just ahead of St Elizabeth, who are sitting within striking distance with 29 points.
Westmoreland remain firmly in contention with 23 points, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion on Saturday.
The JTA/Sagicor National Athletics Championship has long served as a ground for honing the talents of the nation’s future stars, with generations of Jamaican athletes beginning their journey on this very stage before going on to represent the black, green and gold at the highest levels of international competition.
Several athletes announced themselves in spectacular fashion throughout the day, producing personal bests, championship-leading performances and memorable finishes that electrified spectators inside the National Stadium.
Among the standout performances were Dylontae Brown of St Catherine, who produced a meet record of 1.60m in the final of the Boys’ Open High Jump. Shaquana Pusey of St Andrew, who produced a remarkable 14.24 seconds in the Girls’ 100m U11 category in a -3.6 headwind, also delivered one of the day’s most impressive performances.
Chairman of the JTA’s Sports’ Committee, Winston Robinson, says “today’s performances are a reflection of weeks of preparation and hard work, and the final day will be no different.”
Vice President of Communications, Social Media and CSR, Nicole Campbell Robinson, said “the showcase reinforces why we continue to support this meet. The athletes showed stellar performances, and we know tomorrow will be even more exciting.”
With 45 finals still to come and valuable points yet to be claimed, Saturday promises another day of intense competition as parishes battle for supremacy and the coveted title of National Champion.
Patrons can also expect a thrilling performance by entertainer Laa Lee on the event’s final day.
