KINGSTON, Jamaica -A group of 28 aspiring forklift operators celebrated a major milestone as they officially graduated from a rigorous forklift training programme, organised by Project STAR in partnership with Red Stripe through the Desnoes & Geddes (D&G) Foundation, and DECS Management & Logistics Services Limited.

The ceremony, held recently, marked the successful completion of an intensive training programme designed to equip participants with the skills and certification needed to operate forklifts safely and efficiently in various work environments.

In her address to the graduates, Kerryann Buddoo-Waugh, senior employment liaison at Project STAR, commended the graduates for their perseverance and dedication, highlighting the significance of their new skills in the workplace.

“Today marks a huge milestone, not just in your life, but in your journey as a skilled and hard-working forklift operator,” she said.

“At Project STAR, we know that every time you step onto that forklift, you’re not just moving materials; you’re playing a crucial role in keeping businesses running smoothly, ensuring safety, and contributing to the bigger picture of a thriving workforce.”

The programme, aimed at providing practical training and job readiness skills, has successfully equipped graduates with hands-on experience in forklift operations. Participants learnt about safety protocols, operational techniques, and best practices for efficiency in industrial environments.

For many of the graduates, completing the programme was both a challenging and rewarding journey. Eze Melad, one of the newly certified operators, expressed his elation, stating, “I feel overwhelmed. This process took a month, and I’m finally glad it’s over. Now that I’m certified, I feel ready to take on new opportunities.”

Romario Dixon, a graduate from St Thomas, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of teamwork and authorisation in forklift operation.

“The most important thing I learnt is that authorisation is key. Without proper authorisation, you put yourself and others at risk,” he explained.

Despite facing personal challenges, including long commutes and early mornings, Dixon remained determined to complete the programme. “Sacrifices had to be made. My mother saw the effort I was putting in, and I know she is proud,” he said.

Another graduate spoke of how the training instilled values of discipline, time management, and confidence. “Dedication and consistency are key. The skills I gained here are not just for work but for life in general,” he shared.

Dianne Ashton-Smith, director of the D&G Foundation, a key partner of the programme, also underscored the impact of such initiatives.

“At D&G Foundation, we believe in investing in people and creating opportunities for meaningful employment. These graduates now have valuable skills that can drive not only their personal success but also the growth of industries that rely on skilled operators,” Ashton-Smith stated.

DECS Management & Logistics Services Limited, the company that provided internships for the graduates, also expressed their enthusiasm for the programme.

“Graduates, I urge you not to lose sight of the incredible opportunity you have received. However, do not take it as an entitlement but see it as a stepping stone in your own development,” said Sheldon Beckford, CEO DECS Management and Logistics Services Limited, as he encouraged them to maintain discipline.

The training programme emphasised not only technical skills but also safety, responsibility, and teamwork. Graduates learnt how to operate forklifts efficiently, understand workplace hazards, and foster a collaborative work environment. Many participants highlighted that the experience was transformative, helping them build confidence and prepare for long-term careers.

The collaboration between Project STAR, D&G Foundation and DECS Management & Logistics Services Limited, has been instrumental in equipping these graduates with the necessary tools to thrive in the workforce. With their certifications in hand, the graduates are now ready to enter various industries, including warehousing, manufacturing, and construction.
