British man, woman caught with cocaine worth $92.7m at NMIA

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A British man and woman were arrested by the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) after they were caught smuggling cocaine worth $92.7 million at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston on Wednesday.

Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.

According to reports, about 4:25 pm, FNID personnel were conducting security checks for passengers boarding a British Airways flight destined for London. During routine interviews, a British man’s actions aroused the suspicion of the police and his luggage was searched which led to the discovery of seven kilograms (15 pounds) of cocaine concealed in the lining of two suitcases he had.

During the same screening process, a British woman also aroused the suspicion of the lawmen and a thorough search of her luggage revealed approximately 7.2 kilograms (16 pounds) of cocaine in the lining of her suitcases.

The combined street value of the seized cocaine is approximately £454,400 or JM$92.7 million.

Both individuals were taken into custody and are being processed.

This is the first cocaine seizure at NMIA since the start of the year.
