After five years of financial constraints, the Jamaica Observer understands that the country’s football programme is set for a major boost and vote of confidence with reports that FIFA, the sports governing body, has officially removed its restrictions on the Jamaica Football Federation.

The Jamaica Observer was reliably informed on Tuesday that the restrictions were lifted on Monday by FIFA, paving the way for the JFF to access additional funding from the global football body. The JFF currently receives US$1 million (approximately J$156.3 million) annually, along with additional project funding from FIFA but are now set to gain greater economic support from the organisation after addressing and improving several governance issues, which led to the restrictions in 2020.

The restrictions had been imposed as FIFA oversaw reforms to the JFF’s governance and financial structures. Under these restrictions, the JFF received limited funding, with disbursements made in smaller increments.

When contacted on Tuesday, JFF General Secretary Dennis Chung declined to comment on the matter. However, the JFF has scheduled a virtual press conference for today, where Chung is expected to address the issue and confirm the development.

Chung, in January, speaking ahead of a special audit, indicated that he was confident that the JFF would satisfy FIFA’s requirements, leading to the easing of restrictions, while underlining the importance of accessing the additional funding.

“We are confident about it and pressing ahead and making some improvements to our governance procedures and financial governance,” Chung had declared in January.

He emphasised that the JFF had implemented a proper budget and finalised the selection of a travel procurement policy, which had been the only outstanding issue identified by FIFA officials due to the complexities of travel within the Caribbean.

It is not clear just how much additional funds will now be made available to the JFF following the removals of restriction.

Meanwhile, Paul Christie, sporting director of Mount Pleasant Academy, noted that once the financial restrictions are lifted for the JFF, this will present a positive outlook on the country’s football programme, pointing particularly to greater support for development programmes.

“If the ban is lifted by FIFA then we can reasonably assume that there will be more funding that will impact the development of football on all levels at the JFF,” said Christie.

“It will be an exciting day in the life of football in Jamaica. This will be an excellent look for the country as well because they have been countries that have good FIFA financial restrictions before us and are still in restrictions so this will be showing the JFF are doing some good things and I will hope that they continue,” he added.

FIFA remains the JFF’s primary financial source, followed by Adidas, corporate sponsors, and the Government.
