KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) says claims by People’s National Party (PNP) Spokesmen, Ian Hayles and Jesse James Clark, that water being distributed by the National Water Commission (NWC) in Kingston and St Andrew is contaminated are false, irresponsible and reckless.

In a statement on Monday, JLP Spokesman Senator Marlon Morgan said it was unfortunate that the PNP repeated the false allegation despite statements from the NWC on Friday rubbishing the contamination claims.

“Both Hayles and James should be ashamed of themselves. Their false statements represent a new low in the politics of desperation and further confirms that the PNP is willing to attempt to sow panic among the nation on baseless and spurious grounds in order to secure perverse political advantage. The PNP and Mr Hayles, who have a history of making misleading and inaccurate statements, should cease and desist,” Morgan said.

Pointing to Friday’s statement, Morgan said NWC had also assured the public that the water they provide is safe and continually monitored, thoroughly tested and in full compliance with the guidelines established by the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) and World Health Organization (WHO).

The commission also advised, Morgan reminded, that such advisories should only come from the MOHW, which is the body authorised to make such recommendations and it has not indicated any concerns with the water provided by the NWC
