Falmouth, Treasure Beach hunt semis spots

WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – Falmouth United and Treasure Beach could secure the semi-final spots from Zone B of the Jamaica Football Championships if they can score wins over Reno FC and Duncans United respectively in return round games on Saturday.

Falmouth lead Zone B with 26 points, three more than Treasure Beach, both from 11 games played, and a win Saturday would qualify them for the semi-finals.

Both had won their corresponding first round games and will be confident going into Saturday’s round of matches.

Falmouth are coming off a comfortable 5-0 win over St Bess United on Tuesday with Mark Lewis scoring four times and the competition’s top scoring team will be seeking a second win over Reno FC this season.

Falmouth had won the first round meeting 3-1, ending Reno FC’s unbeaten start, and even a point Saturday would be enough to see the Trelawny club through to the next round.

Reno FC, semi-finalists last season, are not out of contention but this will be a must win game for them if they are to stay in contention for a return to the semi-finals.

Treasure Beach are unbeaten but will face a Duncans United team coming off a 4-2 win over Mt Pleasant FA juniors on Wednesday and could be made to work for any points they are to get.

Treasure Beach escaped with a 1-0 win over Reno FC last weekend, the only goal coming from a defender’s error, putting the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, four points separate the top five teams in Zone A in a race that appears headed for the duration of the first round.

Meadforest FC lead with 22 points, one more than Lime Hall FC with Spanish Town Police in third place on 19 points, one more than Baptist Alliance and Tru Juice FC

Meadforest FC will play away to Progressive FC at Carder Park; Lime Hall are away to Portlanders FC at Lynch Park with Spanish Town Police away to Tru Juice.

Games Saturday at 3:30pm include

Grays Inn SC vs Baptist Alliance- St Mary Sports Complex

Tru Juice FC vs Spanish Town Police- Dinthill Technical

Portlanders FC vs Lime Hall FC- Lynch Park, Buff Bay

Progressive FC vs Meadforest FC- Carder Park

Mt Pleasant FA Juniors vs Petersfield FC- Drax Hall

St Bess United FC vs Holland PYC- Lacovia Community

Treasure Beach FC vs Duncans United- Breds Sports Park
