NWC to truck water to disrupted systems due to industrial action
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Water Commission (NWC) says some of its systems have been impacted by the industrial action being taken by some technical staff over a post-reclassification exercise dispute.
In a statement on Tuesday, the NWC said its management team is actively working to minimise any impact on the delivery of water services to valued customers. However, the company said that despite its best efforts, some systems have been affected and will result in some disruption to the water supply distribution.
The NWC did not state the areas currently affected but said it was striving to have these systems restarted in the shortest possible time.
In the meantime, the company said arrangements are being made to deliver trucked water to these areas in order to provide relief to customers.
Disgruntled members of the Maintenance Department at the National Water Commission reportedly took industrial action on Monday to express their dissatisfaction with the bands they have been placed on following a Government-led reclassification exercise.
On Monday, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Matthew Samuda, described the actions being taken by the employees as “not in good order” and said it constitutes a breach of the employment agreement.
He expressed hopes that “good sense” would prevail in the shortest possible time, which would see the resumption of duties of the members of staff.

The NWC said it continues to engage with the restive parties and other relevant stakeholders in order to address the issues raised.
