Hydel lead 4x100m qualifiers at Penn relays
Two-time defending champions Hydel High led the qualifiers in the high school girls 4x100m Championships of America after Friday’s preliminaries at the 129th Penn Relays Carnival at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
The team ran 44.55 seconds to head up the five Jamaican teams that qualified for the final set to be run on Saturday’s final day.
Also making progress were Edwin Allen High, Wolmers Girls, Holmwood Technical and St Mary High
Edwin Allen High, who have won the event nine times, ran 44.64 seconds on Friday, Wolmer’s Girls ran 45.50 seconds and Holmwood Technical was fourth fastest with 46.00 seconds.
Bullis School of Potomac, Maryland was the fastest American school with 46.10 seconds followed by Archbishop John Carroll of Washington, DC- 46.17 seconds, while St Mary High made back-to-back qualifications with 46.18 seconds.
Excelsior High, who were 10th overall and just missed out on qualifying for the final, led the qualifiers for the International final with 46.41 seconds followed by St. Jago High- 46.75 seconds, and 15 time winners Vere Technical with 47.09 seconds.
Two Bahamian schools, Queens College with 47.33 seconds and St Augustine’s with 47.41 seconds, also advanced.
Mt Alvernia High, who were 18th overall with 47.44 seconds, advanced along with St Andrew High- 48.01 seconds.
Charles E Mills of St Kitts and Nevis, the 215th ranked team with 50.88 seconds, and Oberlin High who were ranked 228th with 51.01 seconds, also got into the final.
