Seymoure wins Penns discus in Jamaican clean sweep
Excelsior High’s Najhada Seymoure won the High School Girls discus throw championships on Friday’s second day of the 129th Penn Relays Carnival with a throw of 51.01m.
Seymoure, the ISSA Champs Class One gold medalist who finished second at Penns last year, led a clean sweep of the top four places by Jamaican school girls who have won the event 12 of the last 14 times it was held.
Seymore led early, but was passed by Abler Mills of St Catherine High — who eventually ended second with 50.09m — before restoring her lead in the fourth round.
Clarendon College’s Jamelia Young was third with 47.54m and Abigail Bennett of Merl Grove High, 46.99m, was fourth.
Vere Technical’s Ramona Freemantle finished sixth with 45.82m; Immaculate Conception’s Jada Francis was eighth with 45.44m; Davieka Lewis of St Elizabeth Technical ended 12th with 41.36m; Sage Cruikshank of Alpha Academy placed 13th with 41.20m; and Immaculate’s Julio Sobilo was 14th with 40.66m.
Meanwhile, Carifta Championships Under-20 girls bronze medalist Kimeka Smith of Excelsior High repeated her third place finish from last year in the shot put championships with a best of 14.53m. Jessica Oji of Livingston, New Jersey won back-to-back titles with 15.96m, third best all time at the Penn Relays while Carifta silver medalist Annae Mackey of Queens College in The Bahamas was second. Excelsior High’s Gianna Clayton was seventh with 13.11m and Carifta Under-20 record breaker Marla Kay Lampart of Clarendon College could only manage 12.16m and did not get past the first round.
