From entertainment to protection: Netlink Jamaica’s journey

When O’Brien Francis started Netlink Jamaica in 1994, selling satellite dishes to homeowners, he never imagined it would lead him into the world of advanced home security systems and hurricane protection solutions. But recognising a greater need, he eventually shifted focus to security and design, developing solutions that made homes safer, smarter, and more livable.

“We started with satellite dishes because it was what was hot back then; but it was clear pretty quickly that the market was thirsty for more,” Francis told the Jamaica Observer in an exclusive interview. “We weren’t content with just being a satellite supplier, we wanted to solve real problems for people.”

Seven years later the company diversified its offerings. Gate openers, automatic operators, and garage doors became part of the Netlink repertoire, hitting the market just when demand for home security was heating up.

“We saw an opening. People wanted more than just basic protection; they wanted convenience and reliability,” the business owner explained.

Fast-forward to today, Netlink has grown its staff count to 41 team members and is regarded as one of Jamaica’s go-to brands for homeowners and businesses looking for hurricane protection soultions and security systems.

In Francis’s eyes, garage doors aren’t just doors; they’re powered by smart tech that lets you open them with a tap of your phone. The company offers garage doors from leading brands like Clopay and Amarr, alongside gate openers from top manufacturers such as LiftMaster, Proteco, and Powertech. Francis describes their gate openers as fortresses, engineered with the kind of durability that can withstand Category 5 hurricanes.

“We want people to feel secure, to know that whatever happens — whether it’s a hurricane or a break-in — they’re covered,” Francis said.

Operating from 14 Eastwood Avenue in Kingston, Netlink is not just stopping at basic security. With Wi-Fi and bluetooth-enabled systems, Netlink is merging high-end technology with everyday practicality. While many competitors focus solely on one aspect of security, Francis said his company integrates technology into each product.

“When we first launched this, people were blown away. The idea that your home could be so connected — operating doors, gates, and shutters remotely from your phone — that’s a game changer,” Francis told the Business Observer. “And that’s exactly what we aim for — technology that empowers, not complicates.”

In addition to its core product range, Netlink supplies BFT and SuperJack remotes, along with accessories and safety sensors for garage doors, gates, and shutters. The company’s comprehensive approach means that customers can find everything from intercom systems, supplied by Commax, to Proteco and LiftMaster operators, ensuring a one-stop solution for home security.

Like many businesses, Netlink faces challenges, particularly in sourcing raw materials. Tariffs on imports from the US have driven up costs, with some materials increasing by as much as 15 per cent. Francis acknowledges these challenges but sees them as an opportunity to refine operations.

“Rising costs are an issue, but we’ve focused on improving our operational efficiency to keep our prices competitive,” he said. The company has also made a deliberate effort to absorb some of the increased costs, ensuring that customers don’t bear the brunt.

Netlink is not just maintaining its position in the market, it’s looking ahead. The company is venturing into new products like sunshades, canopies, and pergolas to maintain its stronghold in its core markets of home security and hurricane protection.

Netlink had already been offering installation services for its products, making it a natural next step for expansion into these offerings.

“We’re exploring these products as a natural extension of our current offerings. Homeowners want security, but they also want their homes to be functional and visually appealing,” he said, adding that this expansion into new product categories reflects Netlink’s strategy of continuous adaptation to customer demands and market trends.

“We’re not waiting for opportunities to come to us, we’re always looking to stay ahead of the market.”

According to Francis, what differentiates Netlink from its competitors is its unwavering focus on customer needs. The company’s approach to installation, support, and service ensures that customers aren’t just buying a product but an investment in long-term security and peace of mind, he said.

“We want to make sure our customers feel secure, not just in their homes, but in their decision to choose us. It’s about trust and delivering on our promises.”

Netlink’c accordion shutters are designed to safeguard homes during severe weather and Category 5 hurricanes.

Netlink’s grille-style sunshades offer a practical solution for enhancing inside or outdoor spaces while providing shade and protection. The company plans to expand further into outdoor living with products like canopies and pergolas..
