Spanish Town win INSPORTS Central Championships
Spanish Town Primary won the INSPORTS Devon Biscuits Primary Schools Central Championships on Wednesday, walking away with $350,000 at the GC Foster College.
It was their second title in the last three years as they amassed 355.5 points and were 41.5 points ahead of dethroned champion Naggo Head, who had 314 points.
Naggo Head, who lost their title, are still the island champions but will have their hands full holding onto that as well. They, however, collected $250,000 for their efforts.
Former champions Greater Portmore once again finished third with 176 points and received $200,000. St John’s Primary finished fourth with 127 points, and Ascot Primary completed the top five with 123 points.
The top 10 positions after the 40 finals are completed by Southborough Primary (81.5), Davis Primary (79), Angel’s Primary (74.5), Kensington Primary (56) and Jericho Primary (45), with the teams from fourth to 10th all collecting $100,000.
Naggo Head’s Gabrielle Marshall was the overall most valuable player (MVP) with 24 points. She won four golds, capturing the Class Two 200m, 300m, 4×100 and 4×200 open.
Kayrone Buckham of Spanish Town was the boys’ MVP with 21 points, following wins in the Class Two 200m and 4x100m, while finishing second in the 100m and third in the 4x200m open.
Tevaughn Daley of Naggo Head was the boys’ field event MVP, capturing the high jump and long jump opens for 16 points.
While the girls’ field events MVP was Comoy Jones of Spanish Town with 14 points, having won the high jump open and finished fourth in the long jump open.
Attention now turns to the Western Championship, which starts on Thursday at the St Elizabeth Technical High School and finishes on Saturday.
St James’ Corinaldi Avenue is the defending champion and is expected to retain its crown.
The Eastern Championship is set for May 14th through to the 16th at the Stadium East, with Lyssons Primary from St Thomas the reigning champions.
The all-island grand finale, dubbed the nationals, will be inside the National Stadium between May 29 and 31. Naggo Head are the all-island champions.
