A Winning Formula

A Winning Formula

The Lewis Hamilton x Wales Bonner Met Gala look is still on everyone’s lips!

The Formula One racer hit the carpet with fellow co-chairs Colman Domingo and Anna Wintour, styled by Eric McNeal in an impeccably-tailored ivory suit, which perfectly fit the theme ‘Tailored For You’ — celebrating Black style and the legacy of the dandy in fashion.

Grace Wales Bonner, the British-born, Rock-blooded designer, fashioned Hamilton in an ivory suit with cropped jacket, high-waisted trousers with tuxedo stripe, coattails, a white bow tie, and an embroidered ivory sash hanging from his waistband, topped with a beret by Stephen Jones Millinery.

And while casual observers swooned over the seven-time Formula 1 champion’s sartorial elegance, dedicated stylists and eagle-eyed F1 fans spotted references others missed:

— Cowrie shell embellishments representing ancestral wealth

— Mother-of-pearl buttons echoing traditional craftsmanship

— A beret by Stephen Jones, a nod to black liberation movements

— Racing-inspired tailoring with precise, aerodynamic lines

From Hamilton…

From the moment I heard the theme of this year’s Met Gala, I knew I wanted to work with Grace @walesbonner. This look has taken months of research and development. Every detail has been deeply considered — there’s a lot of emotion and meaning woven into this. This is more than a suit, this is ancestral history. Stylish, spiritual, and sharp….

…
I’m deeply grateful to the Costume Institute at The Met, to Grace Wales Bonner, to the incredible co-chairs, and to everyone who continues to honour the legacy of the Black Dandy. We’ve always been here. We’ve always been fly. And now, we’re seen.

As a member of the host committee at the 2025 Met Gala, Grace Wales Bonner also created bespoke looks for Tyler Mitchell, FKA Twigs, Jeff Goldblum, Omar Apollo, Eric N Mack, Antwaun Sargent, and the curator of the Met exhibition, Monica L Miller.
