Spanish Town Police arrest JFF Championship title
SPANISH Town Police ended their best-ever season in their almost 50-year history by winning the Jamaica Football Federation Championships title, beating Treasure Beach FC 2-0 in the final played at Drax Hall on Saturday.
Both teams secured their places in next season’s Jamaica Premier League by winning their semi-finals.
Jordan Elliston fired Spanish Town Police into the lead in the ninth minute before Kristoff Russell doubled the advantage when he scored a second goal in the 59th minute.
Spanish Town were playing in the Premier League qualifiers for the first time, and after a slow start had reeled off a nine-game unbeaten run to end the regular season, qualifying for the semi-finals on the final weekend of the season.
Treasure Beach, who were the first team to qualify for two finals, winning the then Tier II title in 2023 when they beat Lime Hall Academy, came up short of creating further history by being two-time winners.
Both teams finished second in their respective zones in the regular season but upset their opponents in the semi-finals. Treasure Beach beat Meadforest FC 1-0 over both legs while Spanish Town, who were playing in the championships for the first time, overcame a first-leg 1-0 deficit to beat Falmouth United in sudden death penalties.
