Cavalier held by Arnett Gardens in JWPL
CAVALIER SC maintained second place in the Jamaica Women’s Premier League despite giving up the lead twice and missing a first-half penalty in their 2-2 draw against Arnett Gardens at the Alpha Institute (formerly Alpha Boys’ School) on Saturday as the return round got underway.
It was the second 2-2 draw between the teams this season after they played out a stalemate in the opening round of matches in March and Cavalier SC stayed second on 26 points while Los Perfectos FC, who hammered Federal United 9-0 at Brooks Park, took over third place with 24 points — one more than Arnett Gardens.
Defending champions Frazsiers Whip ran their perfect record to 11 straight wins, beating UWI Women’s FC 4-0 to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the points tables.
Despite heavy rains which created poor underfoot conditions at the Alpha Institute, both teams did their best to get the win and stay close to the leaders.
Shanel Spence sent Cavalier SC into an early lead when she scored her 19th goal in the fourth minute, and should have doubled the advantage later but her penalty kick was saved by the Arnett Gardens goalkeeper.
Briana Cosby levelled the score when she got on the scoresheet in the 35th minute for her fifth of the season.
However, Shadia Shirley restored Cavalier SC’s lead in the 55th minute but, once again, Arnett Gardens responded with Tuanashae Hamilton equalising in the 62nd.
Meanwhile, Nevillegail Able scored a double for Frazsiers Whip as they beat UWI Women’s FC for the second time this season, scoring in the 36th and 56th minutes, while Shaneil Buckley scored in the 76th minute and Akelia Johnson got the fourth goal in the 85th minute.
At Brooks Park, former Reggae Girl Sashana Campbell scored six goals as Los Perfectos FC beat Federal United for a second time this season, taking her tally to 10 goals.
Campbell scored in the seventh, 35th, 40th, 48th, 54th and 72nd minutes while Venicia Reid added one in the 17th minute, Tashika Hamilton scored in time added at the end of the first half, and Shonda Mullings netted in time added at the end of the second half.
WiFi United moved up to fifth place on 15 points after a 1-1 draw with Proven Girls at York Oval, the second time the teams were sharing points this season.
Evernique McCleary gave WiFi United the lead in the 66th minute before Proven Girls equalised in the 84th minute through Vanessa Lee.
