Omar Hawes tipped to head Calabar track programme
Calabar High past student and former assistant coach, Omar Hawes has emerged as the leading contender to replace Corey Bennett as track and field head coach at the Red Hills Road-based school.
It is understood that Bennet’s three-year contract with the institution, which expires this season-end, has not been extended.
Hawes, who was mentored by the legendary Michael Clarke, was a part of Calabar’s successful run that saw them winning the boys’ athletics championships for seven consecutive years between 2012 and 2018.
However, when Clarke left in 2023, Hawes and many of that coaching team were overlooked in favour of Bennett, which caused some tension.
Hawes is now the head coach of St Catherine High School but Observer Online sources have revealed that he is the front runner among the disgruntled old boys’ fraternity.
Calabar’s title drought extended to seven years this season despite an encouraging display, the school finishing second behind arch rivals Kingston College.
During his tenure at Calabar, Bennett has also served as head coach of Hydel High girls who he has led to two titles in the last three years.
While the feat has been deemed impressive by some, it is understood that sections of the Calabar old boys’ fraternity believe that Bennet’s dual role has negatively affected the school’s track and field programme.
