Popcaan condemns violence against women and children, calls for dialogue
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Dancehall star Popcaan has added his voice to the condemnation of violence against women and children in Jamaica.
The entertainer, whose given name is Andrae Sutherland, made the call Monday in an instagram video post he captioned: “Protect the kids in our communities, protect the ladies in our communities, protect the youths.”
In the video, Popcaan stated that he does “not like the direction” the country is heading, citing the recent rape and murder of nine-year-old Kelsey Ferrigon and the brutal attack against a nurse in a road rage incident.
He added that there “needs to be more dialogue in the community.”
“We need to be more serious about these situations and eradicate these rapers that are in our soceity and our surroundings,” he said.
A spate of attacks against women and children in Jamaica has triggered widespread condemnation. On Monday, nurses staged an islandwide protest to voice their disgust at the development including last week’s assault of one of their colleagues which was caught on video.
