Eastern Kingston Promenade project kicks off on Labour Day
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Camperdown High students and residents of Windward Road are among those who will benefit from a project being spearheaded by Kingston Eastern Member of Parliament, Phillip Paulwell.
The project, which began on Labour Day, involves the planting of trees along one side of Windward Road and beautification and painting on the other side.
“On the Norman Gardens side the councillor (Jacqueline Lewis ) has ably assisted us in doing the planting of palm trees— I am so grateful because this is going to mirror what we are doing on the other side; we really want this to be a massive elegant corridor, we call it the Eastern Kingston Promenade,” Paulwell explained.
Trees, benches and solar lamps are also to be placed along the sidewalk.
Lewis, who is the councillor for Norman Gardens, explained that the planting of the trees was two-fold, to provide shade and to beautify the area.
“if you notice along the stretch there is only one bus stop for Camperdown High School. When they are mature enough they will provide shading and protection,” she said.
Lewis encouraged “I would like to see them maintained especially by the people along this strip.”
Regarding the number of Jamaicans turning out island-wide for Labour Day projects, Lewis said it was dwindling and lamented the loss of civic pride, however she lauded her constituents for their effort.
“[The number is] going down but I’m happy for our support here, there are a lot of people working here for free— I’m satisfied with my support.”
