Masicka talks consistency, scores with Mute
Dancehall standout Masicka has earned another stripe with the popularity of his latest track Mute.
Released on May 23 via Def Jam Recordings, the song peaked at #8 on YouTube’s trending music chart on Saturday with approximately 236,000 views.
The deejay, a consistent front-runner in the dancehall space for the last few years, said he released the track with no specific expectation but is pleased with the reception received so far.
“I had no hope for the song, really. I’m just doing music; doing what I love and keeping my fans happy. For me, there is no final destination doing what I love,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
The release follows Masicka leading nominations for the Caribbean Music Awards, including Dancehall Artist of the Year, Dancehall Song of the Year, and Reggae Song of the Year, after another string of successful projects that again underline the artiste’s consistency.
The accompanying visuals for Mute open with a shot of an astronaut in outer space playing a piano performing the song’s melody. The clip jumps back to Earth, where Masicka performs on the bed of a Cybertruck as the entertainer’s trademark delivery wraps seamlessly over a smooth but punchy Atto Wallace-produced beat .
The artiste, who is believed to be dropping a new album shortly, highlighted that he is committed to consistency, underlining that his focus is to remain hungry for continued growth and development in his craft and artistry.
“Consistency is key and loving what I do. I try to better my craft every day; I never get complacent. You can always learn more so I give the music my all — day in, day out,” Masicka, whose real name is Javaun Fearon, reasoned.
Mute also dropped on the heels of Whites (Remix) featuring French Montana.
The latter has surged on DSPs, amassing north of 2.3 million YouTube views. His most recent independent LP, 438, became “Jamaica’s #1 album of 2022 on Spotify” and “the first project to spend an entire year in the Top 10 on Apple Music Jamaica”.
Masicka emerged as “one of three Jamaican artistes in Spotify Wrapped Jamaica for a Top 10 Album, further cementing his status as one of dancehall’s heavy hitters.
