A high-level probe, involving Jamaican and United States law enforcement agencies, is now under way into one of, if not the largest gun find at one of the nation’s ports.

Jamaica Observer sources say more than 200 guns, including high-powered weapons, and thousands of rounds of ammunition were seized by the police at a port in the Corporate Area on Wednesday.

“This could be a record. It is a massive, massive find,” one source told the Observer.

“It has to be some major players in the illegal gun trade involved,” added the source.

Up to press time Wednesday, there was no official word from the Jamaica Constabulary Force with “no comment” greeting every query from our newsroom.

Since late 2024 local law enforcement agencies have thwarted several attempts to smuggle guns into the country.

Late last December almost 40 guns, firearm accessories, and some 3,000 rounds of ammunition were found in barrels labelled groceries at a wharf in Kingston.

In February, 50 handguns, 16 rifles, and more than 4,500 rounds of ammunition were seized by investigators from the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) and Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA), after they intercepted a shipment from the United States.

A Jamaican American, Davion Roberts, was charged in connection with that seizure.

Less than one month later, officers from the JCA and FNID seized 30 firearms and more than 100 rounds of ammunition at another warehouse in the Corporate Area.

At that time Senior Superintendent of Police Samuel Blake, head of FNID, said the police have been ramping up efforts with various stakeholders to disrupt the trafficking of weapons and illegal drugs in Jamaica.

“We continue to leverage our partnership with international bodies to dismantle crime syndicates,” said Blake.
