KINGSTON, Jamaica — Emerging reggae/dancehall artiste LA Benjamin is calling for an end to gatekeeping within the music industry.

Gatekeeping refers to the activity of controlling, and usually limiting, general access to something.

“It’s time for the gatekeepers to step away and free up the youths and let them shine. Over the years, too many talented artistes have been stifled by these people,” said LA Benjamin in an interview with Observer Online recently.

He continued, “I have been unable to gain the recognition that I deserve, and I have been constantly pushed towards the back over the years. Gatekeeping has affected my progress musically in terms of not being allowed to garner a certain experience within my younger days, not being exposed to the wider world of music and what it would have felt like.”

The St Thomas-based artiste had some suggestions to curtail gatekeeping.

“I would suggest to the powers that be, to remove the psychological mind game of the barrier that has been created through long-lasting greed, so the door can be left open for young upcoming artists seeking their breakthrough with their unique musical talent,” LA Benjamin reasoned.

LA Benjamin’s most recent single Lock Dung was released late last year. It was produced by Indeed Records.

“Lock Dung was inspired by the closing down of factories in my parish of St Thomas and others located across the island,” he said.

Despite not being able to achieve the attention that he craves, LA Benjamin continues to pursue his dream and remains hopeful.

“My musical journey has been a very challenging ride, with being pushed aside on so many occasions and left with empty promises. But my humbleness is what motivates me to continue to push forward because I was born to be great,” said LA Benjamin.

The singjay who lists Buju Banton, Capleton, Queen Ifrica, Sizzla and Mavado among his musical influences is currently working on several new projects for Indeed Records.

“Right now, I’m recording some more singles. I’m also recording tracks for my debut EP. Some of these new singles will be released later this year, but we haven’t set a release date for the EP as yet,” said LA Benjamin.
