Our Pacers Running Club’s weekly schedule takes us all over Kingston, running off from key spots that are convenient for parking and generally considered safe. The 5:00 am wake-up call is not easy on a Saturday, but I don’t have to dig too deep if we are running off from Sovereign Centre since a morning treat will be in clear sight. After an invigorating run, fellow club members often head to the culinary haven of Café Blue and Deli Works for our well-earned reward.

We expect Belinda Williams to order four skinny lattes for me, Brandon Farquharson, Garfene Grandison and herself from the best barista, Romell Bailey. My husband, Dr William Brown, would skip coffee, make his way to the Deli Works and ready himself for ackee and salt fish, a full spread to prepare him for a busy day ahead. What a cool concept getting the best of both worlds under one roof!

This dual-concept spot seamlessly blends the comforting aroma of freshly brewed Blue Mountain coffee paired with a continental versus a hearty Jamaican breakfast — think: Ackee and salt fish, callaloo, corn pork, stew chicken, mackerel run down, cook-up salt mackerel, or salt fish, liver, steam fish — you can imagine the spread, right? Fried dumplings are a staple, ripe plantains too and the usual boiled food (banana, yams, sweet potatoes).

Last Saturday we stepped into Café Blue and were greeted by the rich aroma of Blue Mountain Coffee. Adjacent to the café, Deli Works beckoned with its vibrant Jamaican breakfast buffet spread. The ambiance is relaxed and inviting, making it an ideal spot for post-run camaraderie. The staff’s warm hospitality added to the experience, ensuring our group felt right at home. We picked up coffee and settled on the side of Deli Works.

A Jamaican breakfast is a symphony of textures and flavours and The Deli breakfast ticked all the boxes of salty, savoury, sweet and spicy. It’s a meal that fuels the body and tells the story of resilience and the celebration of the island’s bounty. The Jamaican breakfast is often enjoyed with friends, laughter, storytelling and where nobody counts calories. We caught up on the past week, discussed current affairs and enjoyed every bite of our breakfast.
