St Peter and Paul storm to lead at Prep Schools Champs
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Entering the final day of the Jamaica Independent School Association (JISA) Preparatory Schools Athletics Championship at the National Stadium on Saturday, defending champions St Peter and Paul have raced to 82 points and are well on their way to retaining their title.
St Peter and Paul took charge on Friday’s second day , establishing a 24-point lead.
Many-time winners Vaz Prep are the main challengers, sitting in second spot on 58 points, with Mona Prep slipping to third spot on 49 points.
Day one leaders Our Lady of the Angels are down to fourth on 37 points, just ahead of former champions Emmanuel Christian Academy in fifth on 35.5 points.
The top 10 is completed by St Andrew (27.5), Mount St Joseph Prep (26), highly-touted Hydel (22), Belair Prep (20) and Knox Junior Prep (17.5).
In the first final of the second day, Zion May-Hew of Immaculate won the Girls’ Class Two long jump with 3.94m ahead of Shaneika Shann of St Peter and Paul with 3.91m. Shakiela Baker of Knox Junior was third with 3.90m.
Another Zion, this time Zion Reid of Our Lady of the Angels, took the Boys’ Class Two long jump with 4.36m ahead of Jordon Burke of St Peter and Paul with 4.18m. Wolmer’s Declan Stephens was third with 3.99m.
In the Boys’ Class One high jump, Donovan Simpson-Brown of Mount St Joseph won with 1.50m ahead of Luke Heave of Mona also at 1.50m and Shane March of Vaz in third with 1.45m.
The 100m sprints closed the show on the penultimate day as Antware Miller of Hydel Prep sped to an impressive 11.89 seconds to win the Boys’ Class One 100. Nathan Graham of Knox was second in 11.96 and Hydel’s Nathan-Neil Heirs third in 12.32.
Crisan Allen of Ardenne took the Girls Class one in 12.63 seconds ahead of Telexia Pennant of St Peter and Paul in 12.88. Paris White of Stella Marris finished third in 12.98.
Lannaman’s Devoran Dixon captured the Boys’ Class Two 100m in 13.39, with St Peter and Paul getting big points courtesy of Neri Kitson and Lucas Young in second and third, respectively, at 13.45 and 13.63. Hillel’s Nugent Walker— the godson of Usain Bolt— was fourth in 13.93 seconds.
Khariah Peart of Mount St Joseph won the Class Two event in an impressive 13.78, which would have placed her fourth in the boys’ event. Malia Crawford of Wolmer’s Prep was second in 14.00 ahead of St Peter and Paul’s Shaneika Shann with 14.16 seconds.
In the boys’ class three, Jahshua Frith of Belair won in 14.14 ahead of Neymar Mosley of Avondale Prep with 14.16. Dimitri Moore of St Peter and Paul was third in 14.37.
Valentina Moncrieffe of Vaz won the girls’ Class three 100m in 14.99 with Kenoya Robinson of Dunrobin second in 15.02 ahead of Ruth Ann Abara of St Peter and Paul in 15.37 seconds in third.
