Ellis confident Sensational Soul will win Jamaica St Leger
Veteran jockey Shane “Canterman” Ellis believes that Sensational Soul, the Gary Subratie trainee, has the potential to win the Jamaica St Leger and complete the Triple Crown series.
After Sensational Soul’s impressive win in the Jamaica 2000 Guineas on June 8, 2025, Ellis expressed confidence in the colt’s abilities, stating that the longer distances will play to his strengths.
“He has been wonderful. Sensational Soul has been great since his win in the 2000 Guineas,” Ellis said, highlighting the colt’s positive attitude and exercise performance since his victory. “He has been doing well in training right now. He is on top of his game and I can’t complain.”
Ellis further emphasised that Sensational Soul’s performance in the 2000 Guineas has given him the momentum and confidence to tackle the longer distances ahead. “Well, if they didn’t beat me going shorter [The Kingston, 7 ½ furlongs, and 2000 Guineas, one mile] and I know Sensational Soul wants the distance [longer races], I know they can’t beat me going longer in the St Leger,” Ellis told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
With dedication and focus, Ellis believes Sensational Soul can win the St Leger and go on to claim the Jamaica Derby, completing the Triple Crown series.
“Based on his potential, I know Sensational Soul can win the St Leger and go on to win the Triple Crown. A lot of hard work, dedication, and focus are needed to win Classic races.” Ellis’s words suggest that he sees Sensational Soul as a strong contender for the Triple Crown, and that the colt has the potential to make a deep run in the series.
