Jamaica move into World Championships qualifying position in men’s 4×100

Jamaica’s men’s 4x100m team are in a qualifying position for a place in September’s Tokyo World Athletics Championships after winning the event at the London Diamond League on Saturday with a season’s best 37.80 seconds at the Olympic Stadium.

The team of Rohan Watson, Oblique Seville, Kadrian Goldson and Kishane Thompson finished ahead of the Zharnel Hughes-anchored Great Britain-1, which was second in 38.08 seconds and the Netherlands, third in 38.17 seconds.

Jamaica’s time is the third fastest in the world so far this year, behind South Africa and the USA, and saw them take over 15th place in the World Championships qualifying, pushing Netherlands into 16th and Nigeria out of a qualifying spot.

The top 14 team had secured their places at the World Athletics Relays held in China in March and the next two fastest teams at the end of the qualifying period, which closes August 24th, will fill out the field for the World Championships.

Meanwhile, a Jamaican female 4x100m team finished second in 42.50 seconds to Great Britain-1 who ran a world leading 41.69 seconds with France taking third with 43.54 seconds.

Shericka Jackson led off the team, handing over to Jonielle Smith with Tina Clayton running the third leg and Brianna Williams anchoring.
