Titans clash in 105th Jamaica Derby

The stage is set for a riveting battle in this afternoon’s 105th Jamaica Derby, the final Classic race of the season, as top contenders Burning Hedge, I Dream Again, and Sensational Soul renew their rivalry in a quest for glory.

The coveted $7.5-million purse is on the line, and each horse is determined to add another prestigious title to its collection.

The last meeting between these three champions was in the Jamaica St Leger, where I Dream Again emerged victorious, winning by a length and three quarters. Burning Hedge checked in third, while Sensational Soul finished fourth. However, with the Jamaica Derby’s longer distance of 12 furlongs (2,400m), all three runners are well-suited, having been bred to handle the ground.

Burning Hedge, the Jamaica 1000 Guineas winner, has proven herself to be a formidable contender. Her third-place finish in the St Leger showcased her battling qualities and ability to stay with the leaders. Despite being outdone by I Dream Again and Hansa, Burning Hedge demonstrated determination and a strong finish, making her a major contender for the derby.

I Dream Again’s dominant win in the Jamaica St Leger was impressive, with the colt showing excellent tactical sense in making his move at the right time.

Given his St Leger win, I Dream Again should easily handle the derby distance and is a strong contender to lead the field home.

Sensational Soul, meanwhile, is seeking revenge after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the St Leger. Having trained well since then, the colt is poised to rebound with a win. Bred to get the distance, Sensational Soul has the perfect opportunity to make amends and claim the Jamaica Derby title.

Dick Cardenas replaces Raddesh Roman aboard Burning Hedge, while Robert Halledeen and Shane Ellis remain atop
I Dream Again and Sensational Soul, respectively.

The competition among these three champions promises to be electrifying, with each horse possessing a unique set of strengths and abilities. Who will emerge victorious and claim the coveted title? The 105th Jamaica Derby is shaping up to be an unforgettable showdown.

The native-bred three-year-old Futurity contest is positioned as the 11th and final event of the day with a post time of 5:50 pm. First race is expected to gallop off at 11:30 am with a mandatory payout on the Reggae-6.

Nuclear Jet is the dark horse to watch out for in the Jamaica Derby. Despite being considered an upset contender, Nuclear Jet has shown impressive speed and talent, highlighted by his 14 ¾ length win over seven furlongs on July 5, 2025, with Roman in the saddle. Roman, currently on a hot streak, will again ride Nuclear Jet. The challenge for Nuclear Jet lies in maintaining his form over the longer distance of 12 furlongs in the Jamaica Derby.

The field is completed by Uncle Harry, Secret Sensation, Prince Roy, Strong Mind, Beneison, Mark My Identity, Bob The Builder, Pretty Perfect, Cop Car, Big Buzz, and Alchemy of Souls.
