Caribbean islands rocked by 5.3 magnitude earthquake

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 rocked several Caribbean countries on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre (SRC) at the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) said that the quake occurred at 5:16 am (Trinidad time) at a depth of 24 kilometres (km).

It said that the quake was felt in Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and the French island of Guadeloupe.

Residents in Antigua said the quake caused panic with some people taking to social media to report the effects of the quake. Residents on the neighbouring island of Nevis also reported feeling the tremor.

Monday’s early morning quake followed a 4.1 earthquake nearly 48 hours earlier that rattled Dominica, Martinique and Guadeloupe.

The SRC said that there were no reports of injuries or damage.
