Tokyo 2025: Silver for Tajay Gayle in men’s long jump

TOKYO, Japan — Tajay Gayle won the silver medal in a dramatic men’s long jump final on Wednesday at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, equalling his season’s best of 8.34m (-0.1m/s).

The silver medallist completed a full set of medals at the World Championships to go with his gold in 2019 in Doha, Qatar and bronze two years ago in Budapest, Hungary.

Gayle’s medal brought Jamaica’s total to six in the championships— one gold, four silver and one bronze.

Gayle led from the first round, where he laid down a big 8.33m marker (0.5m/s) but was overtaken in the fifth round by Italy’s rising star, 20-year-old Mattia Furlani with a personal best 8.39m (0.2m/s).

Furlani, who won the Indoor Championships gold medal in March, is the youngest ever World Athletics Championships winner.

China’s Yuhao Shi took the bronze medal with a season’s best 8.33m (0.0m/s) while Jamaica’s other jumper Nikaoli Williams was ninth with 7.85m (0.2m/s).
