KINGSTON, Jamaica–Meadowbrook High School in St Andrew is set to celebrate its historic Sunlight Cup Cricket title in 1982, the first time the St Andrew-based institution won the cup that symbolises high school supremacy in Corporate Area cricket and St Catherine, now replaced by the Grace Shield, at a ceremony at the school on Friday.

Meadowbrook Principal, Kevin Facey, says the decision to honour the 1982 champions is in an effort to motivate the incoming class of 2025 students so that they will be “inspired to dream big dreams, not only as it applies to cricket, but in their overall aspirations in life, including academics and other spheres”.

“We want the new students to have a grasp of their possibilities, to enable them to strive for the highest achievement in fulfilling their potential,” Facey noted.

He pointed out that the cricket team’s success in 1982 paved the way for a succession of victories in 1984 and 1986 due to the investment in capacity building in that era, and he wants the new students to gain an appreciation for the importance of hard work and applying themselves to get optimal results.

On Friday, members of the 82’ team, supporters and others who played a role in its success will be present, and a book, “Starling Surprise” written by the captain of the team, Glaister“Jelly” Prince, will be presented to select students.

The school is appealing to parents and alumni to support the book by purchasing copies, which will be presented to incoming students to motivate them.
