Jervian Johnson and the strength of unshakeable faith

Jervian Johnson and the strength of unshakeable faith

IN a world where engineering and manufacturing are still too often defined by metal, machines and men, Jervian Johnson is quietly but powerfully rewriting the narrative. Her rise to Jamaica’s manufacturing elite, marked by her 2023 Jamaica Emerging Manufacturer and Services (JEMS) award win at the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) Manufacturers & Exporters awards gala isn’t just a tale of business success. It’s a story of faith, fortitude and feminine grace, one that proves brilliance is not about fitting the mould but breaking it.

Slender, soft-spoken and radiating calm confidence, Johnson defies the stereotype of what a manufacturing leader “should” look like. “People often say I don’t look like an engineer,” she laughed. “But what does that even look like?”

Behind that easy smile lies a sharp, curious mind, one that sees opportunity in every obstacle and innovation in every unanswered “what if?”

Her story began far from the factory floor, in a high school chemistry class. There, she discovered what she now calls the art of transformation. “I fell in love with chemistry,” she recalled. “It was magical to me, the idea that when you bring the right elements together, something new is born.”

That fascination became her compass. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at the University of Technology, Jamaica, followed by a master’s in environmental engineering at Ajou University in South Korea. Immersed in a culture celebrated for its innovation, Johnson learned about advanced food preservation and sustainable processing. And it was there that inspiration struck.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about how, back home in Jamaica, our beautiful fruits went to waste during peak season,” she said. “I thought, what if we could preserve them, capture their taste, colour and nutrients and make them available all year round?”

That thought became Tropiks365, a vibrant, homegrown brand transforming Jamaica’s tropical abundance into healthy, shelf-stable dried fruits and teas. From spicy mango and tangy pineapple to ginger-infused sorrel tea, every product is a love letter to Jamaica’s fertile soil and creative spirit.

Tropiks365 is more than a brand; it’s a movement rooted in sustainability, family and purpose. “Tropiks365 isn’t just about dried fruits and teas,” she emphasised. “It’s about showing that sustainable manufacturing can thrive right here in Jamaica.”

Her vision quickly bore fruit, literally and figuratively. In just three years, her products are now stocked in over 25 outlets across seven parishes, and exported to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy. She’s tapped into the booming global dried fruit market, valued between US$9 to 12 billion, powered by rising demand for healthy, convenient snacks.

Each success, though, has come with sacrifice. The journey was marked by sleepless nights, countless experiments and moments when quitting seemed easier. “There were times I questioned everything,” she admitted. “But every setback was really a set-up for growth.”

Her story isn’t one of instant success, it’s one of endurance. Growing up, financial struggles tested her will, and in her final year of high school, illness nearly derailed her dreams. “I almost threw in the towel,” she confessed. “But my teachers and mentors believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself.” That support propelled her to earn the Caribbean Examinations Council regional award for technical studies.

Her early trials forged the resilience that would later help her navigate male-dominated lecture halls and boardrooms. “When some of the guys in university told me engineering was too hard for women, I just smiled,” she said. “I already knew what hard work felt like. Faith, discipline, and perseverance had carried me this far and they still do.”

Her faith remains the cornerstone of everything she builds. “My resilience comes from staying focused on my purpose and relying on God’s Word and His grace,” she said softly. “When things fall apart, scripture reminds me that even if I can’t see the path, God already has one prepared. That’s what gives me peace.”

Today, Tropiks365 is a family mission. Her sisters now work alongside her, managing operations and product development, each bringing their own gifts to the table. “It’s special,” she said. “We’re building something together that will outlast us.”

For Johnson, success isn’t measured only in sales or awards, but in impact. “At first, my goal was to help my family beat poverty,” she shared. “Now, it’s about creating employment, especially for women, and contributing to Jamaica’s development. That’s what keeps me going.”

Her company’s accolades reflect that spirit, winning recognition from the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, and the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean for its sustainability and social impact. And once again in 2025, she’s a JMEA awards nominee, this time for Best Woman-led Business and Next Generation Leader.

As she looks toward the future, her goal is clear: scale Tropiks365’s production, deepen its international footprint, and continue proving that innovation led by women is innovation with heart.

Her message to other women is simple but stirring: “Be bold. Stay focused. Don’t let fear stop you. The work may be hard, but the reward creating something that makes a difference is worth it all.”

In every sense, Jervian Johnson is a trailblazer, a woman whose strength is quiet but unyielding, whose faith is her compass, and whose innovation transforms challenges into opportunities. She reminds us that glass ceilings are not limits, but illusions, and that when women rise, they don’t just break barriers; they build new blueprints for generations to come.
