Ministry of Health urges caution as windy weather continue to affect Jamaica
KINGSTON, Jamaica—The Ministry of Health and Wellness is urging members of the public to take the necessary precautions as the island experiences high winds and cooler temperatures due to a cold front positioned west of the island.
According to the ministry in a media release, high winds mean that there may be flying objects and debris that can cause injury, and as such, individuals are urged to limit outdoor activity and exercise caution when conducting repairs.
At the same time, the ministry reminded the public that cooler temperatures may have adverse effects on vulnerable populations, including the elderly and people with sickle cell disease, as the country continues in the influenza (flu) season.
“Persons are asked to wear appropriate clothing that will regulate body temperature while also safeguarding against viral illnesses. The flu vaccine is also available free of cost at health centres across the island,” the ministry said.
Meanwhile, individuals are being advised to take precautions when using generators.
“Generators are not to be used indoors or in enclosed areas; generators should be kept at a safe distance from structures because of engine heat, and persons should avoid using appliances that have heating elements, for example, toasters or hair dryers, while on generator power,” the ministry urged.
Individuals are urged to select the outlet that uses the correct voltage, as some generators can produce 115/120 volts or 220 volts. Individuals who become ill or injured are asked to visit the nearest health centre or private doctor.
