MBU book JPL play-off spot after 6-0 win over Spanish Town

ST JAMES, Jamaica — Montego Bay United became the first team to qualify for the play-offs in the Jamaica Premier League after hammering Spanish Town Police 6-0 in their third round game played at Jarrett Park on Sunday.

Deonjay Brown scored a brace to lead MBU to their 19th win and took them to 65 points which means they cannot finish lower than sixth in the tables.

MBU are five points ahead of second placed Mt Pleasant FA who were upset 1-0 by Tivoli Gardens; Racing United who lost 1-0 to Waterhouse and Portmore United who beat Molynes United 1-0 are tied in third place on 55 points; Waterhouse FC are fourth on 53 while defending champions Cavalier are sixth with 48 points after a 4-1 win over Chapelton Maroons.

At Jarrett Park, MBU who swept the season series against Spanish Town Police, took the lead in the 15th minute when Lucas Lima curled a shot past goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel at his left post in the 15th minute.

Brian Brown doubled the lead when he converted from the penalty spot in the 31st minute after Deonjay Brown was fouled just inside the 18 yards box.

Deonjay Brown scored his first just before the half time break to take the scores to 3-0 and then added his second and his team’s fourth just after the restart in the 49th minute.

Substitutes Kegan Caull scored his first goal for the club, in the 68th minute and Jahmari Clarke rounded out the scoring when he netted in the 85th minute.

MBU’s closest pursuers both lost some grounds; Tkiven Garnett’s added time goal gave Tivoli Gardens a 1-0 win over Mt Pleasant while Javane Bryan scored in the 90th minute to give Waterhouse a 1-0 win over third-placed Racing United.

An own goal late in the first half gave Portmore United a 1-0 win over Molynes United and saw them close the gap on Racing United as the teams are separated by goal-difference.

Cavalier SC who have alternated between wins and losses in the last four games, scored a convincing win over Chapelton Maroons and were gifted the lead in the 27th minute when Osani Ricketts scored an own goal.

Jason Wright brought Chapelton back level almost immediately when he scored in the 29th minute but Akil Henry restored Cavalier SC’s lead in the 38th minute.

Adrian Reid came off the bench to score for Cavalier in the 56th minute to give the champions a 3-1 lead and another substitute Kimarly Scott added the fourth in the 86th minute.

Dunbeholden FC moved up to the seventh spot after a 2-1 win over Arnett Gardens in a game where all three goals came in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Shakeem Powell gave Dunbeholden the lead in the 75th minute and Clive Wedderburn added a second in the 82nd minute.

Fabian Reid scored in time added for Arnett Gardens.

At the foot of the tables, Harbour View moved past Treasure Beach into 11th place after beating them 2-1.

Habbie Mohammed gave Harbour View the lead in the fifth minute but Shanoy Smith equalised in the 13th minute before Trayvone Reid scored the winner in the 83rd minute for Harbour View.

Sunday’s results:

Harbour View — 2, Treasure Beach FC — 1

Racing United — 0, Waterhouse FC — 1

Dunbeholden FC — 2, Arnett Gardens — 1

Chapelton Maroons — 1, Cavalier SC — 4

Montego Bay United — 6, Spanish Town Police — 0

Molynes United — 0, Portmore United — 1

Tivoli Gardens — 1, Mt Pleasant FA — 0
