Corinaldi Avenue opens defence with big win in VMF U-13
CORINALDI Avenue Primary School got their defence of the St James Football Association/Victoria Mutual Foundation Under-13 competition off to a winning start after beating Maldon Primary School 6-0 in their Group A game at WesPow Park on Tuesday.
Riomario Powell, last season’s leading scorer, picked up where he left off with a second-half double for the three-time champions who led 1-0 at half-time.
Irwin Primary School also opened their campaign with a win, beating last season’s finalists Chetwood Primary School 2-0 in the second game.
The competition continues today with three games — DMP Academy vs Flankers Primary at 10:00 am, followed by Howard Cooke Primary vs Anchovy Primary, and Barracks Road Primary vs Green Pond Primary.
Corinaldi Avenue extended their run of not conceding a goal in the first round for at least three seasons, cruising to victory despite a slow start.
Letroy Smith gave them the lead in the 29th minute, reacting quickest to fire home a rebound just before half-time.
Omario Morgan doubled the lead early in the second half, scoring in the 32nd minute, before Powell made it 3-0 from the penalty spot in the 40th.
Omaine Dussard added a fourth in the 44th minute and Jaylon Anderson got the fifth in the 48th, before Powell completed his double in the 55th minute.
In the second game Irwin Primary, who reached the second round last year, scored twice after the break to see off Chetwood Primary.
Omar Livingston opened the scoring in the 45th minute while Romario Lawson sealed the win with a 60th-minute strike.
